Hi Tari,
I sympathise.
I spent about a week trying to figure it all out making lots of mistakes along the way and pestering good people here—like Sacredpath (above). There’s virtually no useful documentation from the themes or WordPress. I wasted a hell of a lot of days.
To get the tiles of thumbnail images working:
1. you need to enable the portfolio function in the Jetpack plug-in (I think I’m right in saying that this is necessary). Note: You may not have Jetpack installed—yet.
2. You need to use ‘portfolio shortcode’ which is dead easy to use, within the ‘Pages’ not posts, that you want the thumbnails to display on. I’m not a web developer and even I can do it. It’s meant to be dead simple.

3. You need to set those pages that will display thumbnails to ‘Full Width’ or ‘2 column’ template NOT portfolio template. I made that mistake.*
4. Decide that one of those pages will be your homepage and go into dashboard > Appearance > Themes (I think) and you’ll find an option to choose a Page as the homepage.
That should help you get what you want.
* I originally set my homepage to ‘portfolio template’ and it caused me a world of pain. It’s not necessary. I think it’s a simple way to just have thumbnails on your homepage, without using shortcode, and which sipmply displays whatever the latest projects are. Shortcode is better and gives you way more options.
Best of luck,
John White
(I should make a proper post on this and put it up here)
