How to create unified looks of all content using Block Theme?

  • I decided to give it a try making WP site using Block Theme. Stumbled at the very beginning on making all web pages look the same.

    What I want to achieve is to have site with header left and right sidebar, content space and footer, and I want that arrangement on every web page on site. The only thing that should change on every web page should be content part.

    I cannot find a way to do that.

    All I can do is to edit/create separate templates for page, posts, and other types separately and try to make them look the same. If I want to change general looks of a site, I have to edit each template and make same changes in all of them.

    I would expect there is one template I can create that would be applied as default to all content (pages, posts, etc..) unless there is specific template created for some content type.

    Is this possible to do at all?

  • Unfortunately, what you are looking for is not feasible. The background is that WordPress works internally with Post Types, each of which is assigned its own template. Therefore there is also the distinction between Posts and Pages. And there are also differences in content that justify this. Posts have more data that can be output – categories, keywords, date of publication, sometimes also the author. This can’t be mapped cleanly in a central template for all post types, especially since this would also have a negative effect on the delivery time.

    Therefore my advice: build the layout you want into each of the templates.

    Maybe I was not clear enough. I do not want to create one template that fits all pages. I want to create one site layout that is applied to all pages. Layout should have space that would be customized for specific need of a page.

    I find that very wrong way of doing it. If I have to change looks of the site and especialy reorganize placement of content of the site, I have to go into every single template and update it. Those changes may be quite complex.

    I am doing websites for three decades and I always followed the same principle: crate master template that lays out site, and then for each page ill it in with custom layout and content for that specific page.

    With WordPress I am forces to copy master template to each content type template and if I have to change it, I must repeat changes to each copy.
