How to customize Upgrade Membership feature?

I want to change the coding of the plugin in such a way that when a user registers for the first time, he is automatically taken in as a free user (without even showing the membership levels page). Then, when the user wants to upgrade his/her membership to premium level, he should be able to do so by going to account settings > Upgrade Membership to Premium and then he should be able to do the necessities for upgrading.
How do I achieve this design?
