How to debug with GDB?

Hi there, been getting these core.* files on wp-admin folder and wanted to now what might be creating them. I’ve downloaded gdb for Windows (mingw version), but when I try to load them using core-file command, gdb tells me that the file is not a core dump.
So, how can I load the core dump into gdb?
