• (First, apologies as I know this must have been asked before – I’ve been looking around but can’t find the answer.)

I have a site on wix.com and want to set up a new site to the same .com address using my new wordpress theme.

I need to keep the wix site active (it’s a profile site that I need for my work) but want to design the wordpress theme and then simply swap them around when it is ready.

My question is how do I set up a wordpress account and design the theme when the urls I hope to use are already in use?

My domain name was bought through 123-reg.co.uk if this is relevant.

    Thanks so much!

  • you can either install WP in a subdirectory

    like wix.com/test

or install server software on your computer and develop loacally, that’s what I do

It’s easier than it sounds…took me 10 minutes total having no idea what I was doing. I just installed XAMPP on my laptop, then installed WP on it. Now I have a dev version of WP I can carry around with me to work on

Thanks so much for coming back to me.

Admittedly, I am a little confused how I will create the urls for my new pages based on a wix.com/test but no doubt I’ll figure that out as I go!

If for example I want to design a new marieteather.com/about page. How will I do this working from a wix.com/test page?

Otherwise thanks for the XAMPP recommendation. I guess I just design it on my hard drive and then when it’s ready close down my wix account and then upload the the wordpress account? Is there a more seamless way to do this?
