there is an extra control panel in the super admin that you have to select which blogs can query all sites. set this and try again

did you add blogs to the args
all for all and 1,2,3 for select sites

    [authoravatars blogs=all]

do watch the performance as the Query will get big

Just looked at the docs and Its not there I need to add it

Using blogs=1,2,3 shortcode creates a strange problem. When i use it on master site, the whole page picks up a background image and widgets from the child site number 2.

Here is the full code i used:
    [authoravatars roles=administrator,editor,author blogs=1,2,3 hiddenusers=ghost avatar_size=1 show_name=true show_postcount=true min_post_count=5 order=post_count sort_direction=descending]

    Any ideas?

This does sound like a bug. When I wrote this code all the sites had the same theme. I would need to setup a test space in-order to debug and I not sure when I can get to this

do you get the theme from blog 3 if you remove blog 2?
    Is it only child theme?
