how to edit archive list

  • I am trying to make two archive pages listing posts from two different categories. Using the archive listing works well, but in stead of getting a list, the whole post is shown. I have read a lot on how to solve this but I can not find what I am looking for. I Hope someone can help me solve this.

    I see two possibilities:

    1 ad some code to the archive.php to just show the posts title and first words(witch code and how, I do not know)
    2 use some tool like the helpful azindex plug-in, only problem with this is that it can not sort posts by date, only alphabetical.

    I am using the default theme with wp 2.6.3.
