Original download of wordpress completed and works fine.
I have someone creating a custom theme for me. He will place all files and do entire set up on my dashboard.

Once this is done, where do I find the actual files to download? I know I can go to Dashboard/Editor and Select the theme and all the files will appear on the right side. How do I get them as a group to FTP to my desktop?

I am sure in this case the creator of my custom theme will also send me the files/folders, but I would appreciate knowing how to do this for other themes I purchase or use from WP.

    Thank you for your help.

    Helen

  • All the theme files will be at your hosted site in wp-content/themes/whatever the theme name is. You are doing this for backup? You know the theme won’t work as a theme from your desktop?

You can use FTP to place the files in the wp-content/themes folder as @kmessinger mentioned.

If you were to make your own theme, all of the files would be placed in a folder which would in turn be placed into the themes directory

Even simpler, is to simply put the folder containing all of the theme files into a zip archive, and just install it through the theme panel in the dashboard

@kmessinger – Yes I only want to do this to back it up or make tweaks using Dreamweaver and then FTP any changes up to my hosting server. I know the theme won’t work anywhere else but WP.

@voodoo & Kmessinger – So when I select a new theme in Word Press, it will automatically appear on my host server because that is where my path was set up originally? I think this sounds familiar. let me know if this is not the case.

    Thanks to both of you!

Yes, whether you install themes by searching through provided admin interface, or you install new themes from a vendor perhaps, and install the zip file through the interface, the files all go to your wp-content/themes folder, which is the same place you would place a theme if manually uploading files.

    Thank you

    No problem! ??

You can use Dreamweaver for ftp and have a completed copy locally. I use Dreamweaver to make changes and then put them on the server. If something goes wrong I use the undo (best feature in DW!) and put the original copy back up. Takes less than a minute.
