In accordance with the instructions under Homepage Settings, I designated a static page as my initial home page and another as my posts page. I got that to work, but my problem is that the posts page is showing the entire contents of posts rather than the custom excerpts I have given to each page. Under Content Options under Blog Display I picked “Post excerpt” but the posts page still shows complete posts. I was able to work around this by manually inserting a “more” comment after the first paragraph of each post, but that is not what I want; I don’t want the reader to see the first paragraph but rather the excerpt, which is a better summary. Is this a bug in Twenty Nineteen? Is there a known workaround?

  • Each theme can choose to show full content or excerpts. Most themes provide a choice for the author. Twenty Nineteen does not provide a choice.
If you want to use this theme, you can make a child theme and change the template files to call the_content instead of the_excerpt. There might be other related things to change, such as the parameters to the function and the styling of the link to the single page.

Actually this problem seems to have been solved by an overnight automatic update to WordPress version 5.1.1 / Twenty Nineteen version 1.3. So it evidently was indeed a bug, now fixed.
