how to get featured photo to show up in RSS feed in Sixteen theme

I’d appreciate any help I can get trying to get my featured photo with each post to show up in the RSS feed. I am using the Sixteen theme on WP 3.9.1.
Earlier this week I tried the solution mentioned here:

which didn’t work. I don’t know if I put the code in the wrong section of the functions.php, or if I need to try a different solution. suggestions?
