• I’ve noticed that with 2017 the page layout looks great on phones but not so great on a desktop screen.

Is there a way to get the page layouts to be the same as the blog layout?

I just don’t see the need for the page title to use up an entire column while the content is pushed over in to the right column. It leaves a lot of empty space. It looks great on my phone but not great on desktop.

    Thanks in advance.

Well I haven’t been able to find any help in getting the layout to look like the blog layout but I have found an article explaining how to get a full page layout on Pages.

    https://www.designbombs.com/master-twenty-seventeen-wordpress-theme/

I’d love to know how to get the right sidebar to show on pages if anyone can point me in the right direction?

Log into your website back end

    select Appearance/Customise
    select Theme Options
    Click on 2 column

Remember you will have to add content to the 2nd column through widgets etc otherwise it will just look like your content has shifted to the right.

Hope this does what you are looking for.

Hi Flyingscotsman. Thanks for the tip but for some reason I’m not seeing a ‘Theme Options’ at all.

Wish I could upload a screen grab.

    Cheers

Sounds like your menu is collapsed. Look at the icons on the left hand edge and you should see a grey circle with a dark gear/black triangle in it right at the bottom of the list (a bit like a play symbol) – click on that and your options should appear including appearance ( hopefully!)

    Hi Alan,

Sadly no. I’m not seeing that. I’ve no idea why not. This is the latest version of 2017. I installed it yesterday. The only gear icon that shows up anywhere in any of the theme tweaks is in the ‘Menus’ section.

    Cheers

    Very odd Gavin

I have uploaded a screen shot of my backend but not sure if the link will work on this forum – may not be allowed. If you can click on the link and view it perhaps you could take a screenshot of your backend so I can see the issue? Make sure you crop out and blur any personal information.

Mine looks the same as yours while in the main admin section although it’s spelled ‘Customize’ in mine which is odd. I then click on that link and I’m presented with this https://pasteboard.co/HCvO9aA.jpg

Ah! I think you may not have set your theme to a static page. Goto Homepage settings and select a static page (it will be on blog at the moment) – then the Theme Options should appear as you have to detail what sections of your site you want to display on the static page. You should then be able to set up a 2 column arrangement.

    Hope it goes ok

Also on reading your post again, I don’t think the 2 column mode is the proper solution for you. If you are simply trying to widen the display then there is a better way to do it. It is relatively easy to control what width your main posts are.

Thanks Alan, you were completely right but sadly this doesn’t fix the problem. All I get is a page title taking up the entire left column. It even mentions this on the settings.

”When the two-column layout is assigned, the page title is in one column and content is in the other.”

I’m trying to get away from this layout that just wastes screen space.

that’s right. I have managed to widen the display and it looks much better. I’d love to be able to add a sidebar to certain pages so if you have any tips on how to do that it would be brilliant.

It can be done I know but it’s not something I have done so I need to research the method/coding.
