How to have a static Main Page?

I am just starting to try to create a page with WP as I have been advised. However, I’m not sure if it is what I should be using.
What I desire is a simple, totally custom Home(Main) page designed by myself with links to just a few other sub-pages, also totally customized by me. This main page would contain no dynamic content (no posts). Only, maybe, one of the sub-pages would need to have this post-oriented, blog type of behavior.
Is it possible to use WP for this type of structure? It seems to be set up so that your main page is always a posting page and with templates that have only limited customizable aspects.
What I want is maybe more conventional and WP is not for me? Can I use WP for just my one “posting” area of the site so that I can design the rest of it as desired?
