How to have only Parent categories show during submission.

Right now, that’s not supported. Users can pick any category, parent or child. If you’re using Enhanced Categories they can choose parents first (separately) but it won’t limit them from seeing children.

I’m not sure how you’d get postings into the right categories if you didn’t allow users to select a child category, though.

I would go in and manually add a person’s name as a sub-category. I have my site (in maintenance mode) set up for people to list a “By Person” listing or a “By Show” listing. I then go in and add their name for display purposes as a sub-category of the parent category on the main page. When I do this it allows others to post in the person’s name when submitting a listing.

Yeah, unfortunately you’re using categories in a rather unique way. BD can’t support what you’re looking for right now unless you hack the plugin to avoid that display altogether, which is something most people want.
