• Would like to change my appearance layout using my Twenty Fourteen Theme based Blog to have a “grid layout” . Site is https://www.dannorrisblog.com. I am not a programmer but can follow logical instructions. Is there documentation that describes how to set up grid layout so as to have individual posts including a graphic within each grid position? Sorry for this very basic question as the Twenty Fourteen graphic shows the layout in grid format however have never been able to decipher how to accomplish this. Thank you.

  • Hi, Dan. Are you referring to the featured posts at the top of the blog page? Here’s how to set it up:

    1. From the admin dashboard, go to Appearance > Customize.
    2. On the left side, expand the section that’s labeled Featured Content (you may need to scroll that left side down to make it visible).
    3. For the drop down list labeled Layout, select Grid if it’s not already selected.
    4. In the Tag Name field, the value is probably featured. You use this tag to indicate which posts you want to appear in the top Featured Posts grid. You can change which tag it looks for here, or leave it as featured.
    5. Click the Save & Publish button.
    6. For each post that you want to appear in the Featured Posts grid, edit the post by adding a featured tag to it (or whatever tag you specified in step #4). Those posts will then appear in the Featured Posts grid at the top of your home page.

Thank you very much for your response…I very much appreciate your efforts. Perhaps I must not be describing what I want properly…I am not looking for a “featured blog page” in the grid format. Let me try to describe it again.

I want to layout each “post” that I create in a “grid format”…where each grid partition may contain a graphic entity as well as text. Layout pattern would be three grid partitions across and unlimited partitions down.

I see the Twenty Fourteen layout example and I see six grid partitions on a displayed page. I interpreted this to show how the layout of a post could be formatted in grid format. My choice would be to have an unlimited number of grid partitions on a given post.

At present, my post layout design on https://www.dannorrisblog.com allows about three sub-post topics before exceeding a self-imposed 300-700 word limit. I would like to include many more sub-posts on any given post…with the subpost only providing a title, graphic, link and possibly 7-10 words in a very compact and small grid format. I envision three columns across of grid partitions with an unlimited vertical layout space. Does this provide a more accurate picture? Thank you very much.

Which graphic are you referring to, the one on the theme’s home page? That image does not display a grid layout. Along the top is the featured post grid with three featured posts. Then there are two video entries in the right sidebar using the Ephemera widget. Finally, the large image at the bottom is the top part of the latest blog post.

Twenty Fourteen does not natively support a grid layout, and I can tell you from experience that you will have a difficult time trying to implement one just using CSS. You may want to try using a static page as your home page, along with a plugin like Post Tiles, but you may be better off looking for a portfolio or magazine style theme.

Thank you again. I copied the URL of the Theme page I am referring to…by description when you open the Themes Page in a blog it shows (6) themes…I am referring to the one in the top left which should be shown by the URL below…

Your explanation clarifies my misinterpretation that Twenty Fourteen doe not natively support a grid layout. I do not know how to implement with CSS so this is not an option that I would try.

I very much like your recommendation for the Post Tiles plugin and I also looked at WP Post Tiles both of which appear to fill my needs. If you have any comments about use of either of those it would be very much appreciated.

In any case you have been exceptionally helpful and I am very appreciative. Very best regards.

There is one further request on a different subject…I am receiving many email messages from WP advisig of “SNAP Error Logs” where schedule periodic posting has not occurred properly. Do you have a suggestion as to where to obtain advice for correcting this error issue? Is it the Forums?
