How to import my project from localhost to the wp server

  • Hi all

    First of all let me say that I’m using school holidays to study some wordpress and this is my first contact with it so if I make such a newbie question be gentle with me.

    I started to work with WP through the free online way, with a free wordpress domain. I activate a free theme (Parament) and I was looking to hide/remove the sidebar from the pages. I looked for settings, tools and didn’t find anything to accomplish it. So I started to look for some code. Also didn’t find any php file / code in the online administration area. I found it very very strange.

    Then I start to work localhost, and finally I could make some very basic changes and remove the sidebar on pages by comment the line inside the page.php file.

    Now I was looking to import the hole project. Not just the content/ pages / posts, but also the changes that I made in the page.php file.
    The only thing I could import was an xml file with the content.

    Is it possible to export the hole project and then import it??

    If at any momement of my process I made something wrong or could it made in a simple or different way please let me know, so I can learn.

  • When you say “free wordpress domain”, are you referring to wordpress.com? If this is the case you cannot do what you are wanting, regarding page.php changes. Refer to the differences between wordpress.com and www.ads-software.com:

    Yes, I was trying to host at wordpress.com.

    I can see that I have to pay to host at www.ads-software.com. =(
    There’s no other free solution? even with hosts outside wordpress project??

    There is no such thing as hosting at www.ads-software.com — if you choose to go that way, you pay your hosting company, which could be anything from free (with lots of ads and limits on what you can do: NOT recommended) to thousands of dollars a month (if your traffic rivals, say, Google’s: almost certainly overkill).

    OK I said about hosting at www.ads-software.com becauso of the 1st point of www.ads-software.com (self-hosted) Cons in of Difference between WordPress.com and www.ads-software.com I guess that bluehost its a company non-relatted with WP.

    Yep, correct — all the hosting companies on that page are independent entities.

    The only reason I’m harping on that point is that owning your own site is a bit like moving to your own house after living in a hotel: you get choose whatever neighborhood you want to move to, and paint the walls whatever color you like, but there’s no more free maid service ?? So it’s worth understanding what it actually entails, as well as both the pros and the cons.

    Just one more question, may be off-topic.

    I had the following thought, and please say if is that possible.

    I already have a free domain at wordpress.com. If I subscribe a free hosting and upload the localhost project to this free hosting, when someone access to my domain will see the project hosted at the free-hosting company. Is that possible?? I know that it is possible to make redirects with domains, but this is not the case. In my case I have only one domain and 2 hosts, but the main host will be the free hosting company.

    (I understood about the free maid service, but this is my fisrt steps in the web world. I’m trying not to spend money know. it’s just to playing around)
