• Hi there, I am completely lost with wordpress 6
some previously obvious things to do disappeared in version 6 : category based menus, add a favicon etc
when I search help I get lost in tons of page that keep explaining how to do in previous versions of WP (pleaaaase mention which version your explanations/videos apply to!!!)
    my question/demand :

Where can I find a guide of how to do with the new version compared with how I did with old version?

in particular : create menus based on categories, add a favicon

  • What theme are you using? That has a lot to play here!

I am using the default 2022, with the bird.
In previous versin of wordpress I couls set the favicon or link the menu to categories independently of the theme – it is good practice to decouple functionality (navigation) from presentation (theme)

I am using the default 2022, with the bird.

Just switch to another default theme (or any other “classic” theme)… and you’ll be back to familiar grounds.

WordPress is in a transition. That began with the block editor (aka Gutenberg), but is by no means stopping there. The new 2022 default theme is a block theme supporting FSE (Full-Site Editing). This works differently from the “classic” themes you may be familiar with.

The gist is that with FSE, we can edit all parts of our entire website from the Site Editor (Beta), using the same blocks used in the Block Editor (aka Gutenberg). No more writing PHP code and editing theme files.

If you’d like to explore this brave new world, here’s a good place to start: https://learn.www.ads-software.com/course/simple-site-design-with-full-site-editing/

Other than that, just switch to a classic theme and you’ll be back the the “old” and familiar way of using WordPress.

    Good luck!

Hi, thank you for your explanation.
I am willing to learn the new way, but it would be easier if there was a guide explaining how to “translate” old way of working to gutenberg.
In particular, I praise the avoidance of php, but deeply regret that I could not find how to do the simple things described in my initial post ??
