• Hi,
I have to move a WP site to another domain where I already have WP running in the root.
Because this is a temporary solution, I don’t want to change the existing WP installation to multisite. I want to keep both sites and DBs separated as I’ll move the site back later.
So, in a nutshell, I want to move site.com/wpsubdir/ to site-running-wp.com/wpsubdir/

I’ve tried a dozen different things, mostly around excluding that subdir from the root’s rewrite rules but nothing works. The root’s WP site still takes over and shows a 404 for every page, including static html ones.

    Any suggestion?
    Thanks!

Do you have a host that auto installs the WP for you? I do exactly what you want all the time. I just tell the installer where I want it but you have to have a separate database for each site. I have site.com then site.com/site1, site.com/site2 etc.. They are completely different sites yet installed off the root of site.com.

    rbl,

The first thing that comes to mind would be that the new site you placed in site-running-wp.com/wpsubdir/ is trying to connect to the same database as site-running-wp.com; the details in this database says that the website is actually at site-running-wp.com, so you’re redirected to the root WP site. Have you migrated the database from site.com/wpsubdir/? You’ll have to manually edit the wp-config.php file of The Site Formerly at site.com/wp-subdir/ to put in the new details of its database.

Please let me know if this cannot be the source of your problem!

And how do you have the permalinks configured at the root’s WP, @questas_admin?

@terrykimura, I have done that. The problem is that the root’s WP site is overtaking everything. I have placed a test.html file inside the new subdir and when I try to access it, I get WP’s 404 page, styled as my root’s WP.

Like I said, I let the WP install from the Cpanel. It sets itself up including the database and permalinks, I make no changes to them. When it asks me where I want the install I select the domain and there is an option for a subfolder. So I choose site.com and in the subfolder I enter what I want. When I access the site I use site.com/site1 and the admin of course would be site.com/site1/wp-admin. They are completely separate sites.
The root shows all the normal WP files and folders and SITE1 folder which if I go to it I will find another set of WP files and folders. There is no conflict between the sites.
