• HI,

After being very anxious to get my website up and running and spending ages trying to decied if Joomla, Drupal or WordPress would be best for my needs, I was finally very happy to have finally decided WordPress and up and runnning ASAP.

Beforehand I had gone to 1&1 registered my domain, bought a POP Email package for that domain and got hosting through their HOME PACKAGE which I considered good value since it was free the first 3 months and only £7.00 p/month there after.

So I went to install WordPress on it and suddenly found out that this hosting package has everything except the MySQL server. To have the MySQL server with 1&1 I’d have to upgrade to the business package and that costs £10 per month (almost $20) which is starting to go into silly prices for hosting for a simple 5 page website.

    So my questions are:

    1) Is there any way round this? To install WordPress (I obviously want to map my domain, this is essential) keeping my hosting package and using another MySQL server somewhere else? (sorry I’m not the biggest geek so excuse my naivety)

    2) It would be a pain having to move hosts because I’ve also got my domains hosted with 1&1, but If I had to change web space host who should I go with?

I was recommended POWWEB from Internet Business Mastery because they said they had a free 1877 number with 24 hour support (this makes it possible to call from the UK with Skype and pay a cheaper price in $$$ instead of £££) But I’m starting to cynically suspect that it was just another affiliate marketing scam of theirs to just fill their wallet because I’ve tried to call their sales line 15 times only to be told by a machine that no one was available to answer. It’s dirt cheap though.

I was viewing these articles that confused me a little bit, does this mean that I don’t need to upgrade my package (like 1&1 tells me) or move my host to one with MySQL to be able to install WordPress?

I Came across this text and links from the WordPress instalation page also that confused me further, could I just install it locally? I have a two year old Macbook Pro that I’d upgrade for a new one 4 months, is this a good idea?

    Installing WordPress Locally

If you have a sufficiently powerful home computer and a sufficiently fast broadband connection, you may want to avoid certain hosting charges by using your own computer as a server. The following tutorials will show you how to setup a server environment and install WordPress on your home computer.

Install WordPress Locally on MacOS X with MAMP (easy)

So where now? Any help much appreciated,

    Cheers

  • You might have better did a little more investigation before starting with things! But of course you can just look for hosting that includes databases and leave your domain name at 1&1 or move the domain. That shouldn’t take too long either.

Hosting your own site, means that you have to have a server (on your PC) running 24/7.

    Thanks Gangeri,

Yeh I got the hosting package before I ever knew I was going to use WordPress. I’ll look at other web hosts because I won’t have my computer switched on 24/7
