How to keep widgets in place in online version

When I use Theme Test Drive, and my new theme uses different sidebars and/or widgets, and when I go and use them while testing, each time when I disable the plugin and view the old online version, all the widgets are gone. I then have to add them all again (quickly, because the front end can be very empty at that moment) to make the current site work again. Then, when I want to further test the new version, I have to add all the new widgets again etc. etc.
How can this be avoided? The only way I can think of is by installing a local version of the site.
