• Hi
I’m kind of new to wordpress and need some help.

I’ve installed wordpress on my hosting package (uk-cheapest) and have bought a domain (www.katiesfabfaces.co.uk).

I have a wordpress website katiesfabfaces.co.uk/wordpress (this was set up at https://www.www.ads-software.com) but I want to know how to link it together with https://www.katiesfabfaces.co.uk so that when people want to come to my website, they type the domain name without the “wordpress” bit on the end.

Does anybody have any ides please?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

You can simply install WordPress in the root directory of the website. Once installed, connect the new WordPress installation with the old installation WordPress database (the /wordpress one) and simply login to change the website URL from the WordPress Admin Console > General section.

Refer to the document Moving WordPress.

    Hi John,

    Thanks very much, it’s worked!

One last question if you can help, the link is katiesfabfaces.co.uk. How do you get it to be https://www.katiesfabfaces please?

You can do that from your DNS. When you ordered the domain and your hosting, you configured your domain to point to a particular IP, correct?

In that case you have to add a new A Record (Host) and the record should be:

www – ip of where website is hosted.

I don’t know to be honest. What you just said makes no sense to me. Sorry, could you either go into a bit more detail or send me a link for a tutorial please?

    Thanks!!

If I understood you correctly and you want to remove the “.co.uk” part, then I’m afraid it is not possible. Sorry.

No I don’t want to remove the “.co.uk” part but instead I want to add the “www.” part at the beginning of my url.

At the moment, it works as “katiesfabfaces.co.uk” but I want it to work as “www.katiesfabfaces.co.uk”

    Does that make sense?

Oh, now I get it. Technically speaking “www” is just a subdomain. If you have access to your apache settings you could edit your default.conf file in the /sites-enabled/ folder and add “ServerAlias https://www.katiesfabfaces.co.uk”.
If you don’t, you might be able to do something from your hosting control panel.

    Correct. www is a sub domain technically speaking. In this case the DNS records are already in place as per the below;

    > katiesfabfaces.co.uk
    Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
    Address: 8.8.8.8

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: katiesfabfaces.co.uk
    Address: 109.203.121.198

    Server: google-public-dns-a.google.com
    Address: 8.8.8.8

    Non-authoritative answer:
    Name: katiesfabfaces.co.uk
    Address: 109.203.121.198
    Aliases: https://www.katiesfabfaces.co.uk

So what you need to do now is from your hosting provider configuration, configure the website to accept also https://www.katiesfabfaces.co.uk. Right now https://www.katiesfabfaces.co.uk is configured to redirect to katiesfabfaces.co.uk, i.e. not keep the www. Is this the correct way you want it?
