How to make a thumbnail lead to a gallery?

I am trying to create a similar gallery to this one: https://cleverlovephotography.com/?cat=5. The gallery has thumbnails lead to a popup graphic that you can view the whole gallery/category through by clicking “next”. How would I link separate thumbnails to posts like this?
