how to make the featured image link to the event

How are you displaying the featured image? Can you provide the code?

im also using Event Organiser Posterboard,

to display them.

Ah, you’re using the posterboard :).

Something like

<a href="<%=event_permalink%>"><%=event_thumbnail%></a>

should work.
