how to modify text in widget titles Archives and Categories using child theme

  • I needed to change the wording of my sidebar widget titles “Archives” and “Categories” to “Posts by Month” and “Posts by Category.”

    I figured out how to do this by modifying lines 244 and 452 in wp-includes/default-widgets.php.

    However, I know that I will have to re-introduce these changes after every new WordPress update.

    So I am looking for a way to change sidebar widget titles via my child theme instead – if that is possible. Does anyone have any suggestions?

  • When you add widgets to your sidebars, there’s a text field named “Title” where you can enter text to be displayed instead of the default title. Is that not sufficient for your needs?
