How to optimize my wordpress website

I am recently getting issues of slow site loading. I don’t what has caused this because I didn’t install any new plugin, didn’t install any new theme and I only did the updation of some of the plugins, whose update appears.

I have started seeing database connection errors frequently and also slow site loading. I saw my mysql_slow_queries folder in File Manager in cPanel. And, I could see the slow MySQL queries log, which was more than 300 KB in size (I am talking about the size of the notepad file containing the slow queries record). Earlier, it used to be in bytes.

Can anyone help me out in optimizing the databases?

Although, I cleaned my database by deleting all the logs and history of akismet data by reducing the size of wp_commentmeta table. It reduced my database from 160MB to just 20MB. And, that I did on 8-March-2013. Can it cause the database connection errors? I don’t think so.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
