How to prevent directory browsing

Hi, Can you advise me please how to hide the directory listing to prevent direct access to the directory? When a file is viewed, you can just copy the link, paste it in a browser page, trim the URL and bingo, the entire directory liting is displayed, including the files hidden by the shrotcode addon. This is a security concern and reduces the value of your plugin and addon.
Do you have a fix or setting within your plugon, or should I use something like WP Hide or modify the .htaccess file?
