How to properly choose words for TAGS.

  • First off, I’m a newbie. ??

    Whenever I create a product page or post page, there is a widget in the left side called tags and I’m suppose to add key words to it. I know it has to do with helping people search for it, but I’m still not clear. Here are my questions as I want to learn this once and for all.

    1.) How do these tags help a web surfer find me exactly?
    2.) If the product page is a pair of NIKE AIR JORDANS.. what words do I choose? Do I use common phrases like: Nike Air Jordan, Michael Jordan shoes, Air Nike, Nike Basketball, MJ, etc…
    OR, do I use singular words and separate them by commas like: Nike, Air, Jordan, MJ, Michael, Reebok, Adidas,
    3.) Is it wise to put in keywords that are rival brands? Kind of like how some eBay sellers would put keywords in their headline even though it’s not the product they are selling. They just want people searching Reebok to also land in their Nike page.
    4.) WordPress tags and meta-tags are the same?
