How To Properly Credit Multiple Theme Authors

  • Question: What is the proper method for documenting ‘original authors’ for a theme that is very customized, but based on their original theme?

    Like most of us probably do, I often start WP builds with a base WP theme (usually 2010, 2011, etc.).
    We spend a lot of time customizing this theme and making it look exactly the way I or *cough cough* our clients want.
    When we launch the site, we usually name it something different, but do not know how to handle “authorship”

    It only seems fair that the original theme author should have a line item somewhere for designing the base theme, but I have not been able to find any documentation on this, other than the suggestion of creating a child theme for our customizations, which can cause issues down the road.

    Thoughts, answers, suggestions?

  • I’d suggest something in the Description tag of the theme’s stylesheet along the lines of “Based on the Foo theme originally created by John Doe”.
