I previously posted this in the Twenty Twenty-Two forum, but I’m not sure it’s really theme-specific, and nobody has responded there, so maybe not?

    Anyway:
It’s not really a huge thing, but it’s in the nature of my site that it would make more sense to have the site title first, then the page title, in the title of the HTML page.

So at the moment it’s like History – Monotropism, but semantically, Monotropism – History (or even Monotropism History) makes a lot more sense. Same with the other pages, because the title of the site is a concept, not a person or a company.

I’m almost sure I used to know a way to change this, but I’ve hunted all over, so I’m guessing it’s a theme thing and Twenty Twenty-Two either doesn’t support it, or I just haven’t thought where to look?

  • You’re using the Yoast SEO plugin.

Your pages’ HTML title and meta tags are controlled by this plugin (and whatever you enter in the plugin’s various fields).

For the TITLE, go to Yoast SEO => Search Appearance, and configure “SEO TITLE” variables. I just installed the plugin, and the default was:

    %%sitename%% %%page%% %%sep%% %%sitedesc%%

But it seems yours has been altered from the default.

You can re-arrange the positions of the variables or take out any that you don’t want in the HTML title.

For what you desire, the following should work for you:

    %%sitename%% %%sep%% %%page%%

If you need further help with this, I’ll recommend you make a new post in the Yoast SEO plugin’s own support forum, so the plugin’s authors and support community can help you:

    Good luck!

Thanks! I would not have thought to look under Yoast > Search Appearance > Taxonomies, and would not have guessed that ‘SEO Title’ meant HTML page title.

    I’ve changed it to
    %%sitename%% %%sep%% %%page%%
which doesn’t seem to have had any effect so far, but if I need further help I’ll take it to the Yoast forum.

    Thanks again!

which doesn’t seem to have had any effect so far,

On your homepage, in the browser’s tab, I now see Monotropism - History of Monotropism.

And in the HTML code, I see <title>Monotropism - History of Monotropism</title>

Where your Site Name = Monotropism

And Page title = History of Monotropism

So the change seems to be working.

Note that the setting at Yoast > Search Appearance is GLOBAL (ie affects the entire site), but you can control this on a page-by-page basis in the Yoast metabox in the page editor.

That’s great – the title must have just been cached somewhere at the time of my previous comment.

Really appreciate your help with this.
