How to Record Who Created/Modified a POD

I would like to store the user displayname/id (whatever) of the person making the change to a POD.

If I create a field to hold it (hidden), then how would I intercept the save/create operations to update it’s value?

The pod already holds the last modification time so I don’t need to store that myself.
