I created a site using VistaPrint several years ago (the URL looks like https://www.mysite.vpweb.com). Recently I created a new site in WordPress to replace that one and I shut the old site down. I still see references to the “vpweb” version when I do random Google searches, and the links take you to a 404. How do I get those old pages to redirect to my new site if I don’t have access to the old site anymore? Is there something I can do or a plugin I can install in WordPress to address this?

    Thanks!

  • Hi,

If you don’t have access to your old site, it is quite likely that you cannot create any redirects.

However, Google can help you remove such outdated content as described in the article here – https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1663691?hl=en

    Cheers,

@shandycat: Take a look at the plugin WordPress ? Redirection ? WordPress Plugins. You can log all 404’s and then decide which ones to add 301 redirects for.

@songdogtech: I tried that plugin (and a couple of others), but they seem to work only on pages in the CURRENT site that need redirection to another page in the current site.

Ah, you’re right; my bad. You can’t strip the vpweb from the URL without a redirect rule in .htaccess. And you can’t host and set up .htaccess at vpweb, of course.

Maybe the best thing to do is set up a 404 page with verbage that says, hey, if you’re coming from Google, I’ve redesigned my site.

And delete the old URLs in Google’s index, as @ abytecurious said.

Yes, such is the way with VistaPrint, I’m finding. I’ve followed the steps abytecurious has suggested; now we shall wait and see.

    Thanks all for the advice!
