how to reduce white space padding around twentysixteen theme header?

    We are building a child theme for twentysixteen, which has lots of white space padding above title and menu in the header, and also between header info and the beginning of post/page content. Can someone point us to where the padding space is defined in the .css and how we can remove these large blank areas?

    Also since it is a child theme, can we just add these modifications in the child theme css, so that only these override the parent’s style.css? This will make the child theme independent of future updates of twentysixteen.
