how to remove hidden credit links from plugin

  • it used to be relatively easy to remove unwanted credit links from plugins. you’d open the correct file and control+F for ‘powered by’ or ‘https://www.pluginwebsite.com’ and strip it out

    I could even find when this was obfuscated through layers of php code.

    now it seems that newer plugin developers have found some sort of way to completely hide all trace of their credit link in the plugin files. i think someone should step up and explain the trick.

    i’m okay with giving credit when appropriate, but in certain situation i cant, like where i have a landing page and i dont want any external links for people to leave as that defeats the purpose of a landing page.

    come’on Cohagen! Give these people air!!

  • Why not contact the author directly? Ask if it is okay to remove and if so how. For the right reason might be fine. Some will remove it with a small donation.
    Please realize that some of us spend quite a bit of valuable time creating and supporting these plugins. The least we sometimes ask is to have credit given where due. If you do not like the credit link for whatever reason then try a different plugin. Or write one yourself. Or try a commercial plugin.

    i understand. outbound links can lower the conversion rate on a landing page. its one of those instances you just cant have them there. also, we do live in the internet

    is it a plugin downloaded from the wordpress site here?

    If so it must be GPLv2 so you can edit it…. and “The plugin must not embed external links on the public site (like a “powered by” link) without explicitly asking the user’s permission. ”

    i can edit it, but for the life of me cannot find where the link is in the code. the specific plugin in question is WP Email Capture

    try opening the source code window and looking for things such as class=”someclass”, id=”someid” or a div with some style in it. Anything like that might help you to compare it with when you look at the code in the actual file. This may help you find it easier.

    thanks for the suggestion but there is nothing. it looks like,

    there is no class, id or div around it

    AS I said before you could try contacting the author. They seem to have an active website.
