How to Remove Malware Hack of SEO Spam links in Header

  • When you go to my site, it looks fine:
    https://jeremygregg.com/

    But when you see it in a Google search, it says “This site may be hacked.”
    https://www.google.com/search?q=jeremy+gregg

    ANd I don’t believe it appear on iPhones any more.

    When I use Google Webmaster Tools to do a “Fetch as Google,” I can see the problem. It has a bunch of links to various viagra and wellbutrin sites… but only Google sees this!

    How can I get rid of it?

    I have changed the secret keys in WordPress’ wp-config.php file to help prevent this, but I really would like to clean my site … without manually rebuilding the whole thing.

    Ideas?

  • Unfortunately, resolving a hack is a complex process. Hopefully, you have a back up you can restore from prior to the hack. Even with that, there are several steps you will want to attempt first. For more information, please review: FAQ_My_site_was_hacked

    Yes, sadly, there is no quick fix.

    Below are a few of the steps I recommend in recovering from a compromised site situation.

    – Convince your host to recover to an older version with the hacks.
    – Or, contact an expert to clean your site of malicious code.
    – Once recovered make sure all is updated to latest versions.
    – Change all web site related passwords.
    – Install security plugins, and research methods to better secure your site.
    – Contact Google once all is clear and submit a “request for review” if needed.
    – Contact Google and see the “Fetch as Google” option within your Google Webmaster.
