You can hide it using CSS display: none.
E.g in your Child Theme stylesheet, try using,

#branding #searchform,
#access {
 display: none;
}

I tried putting it in the style.css right after the structure starts and it did not work.

yes it didn’t work. I put it in the child theme, then activated the child theme with the code saved. I tried cutting the code and pasting it right after header stuff starts, that did not work either.

I don’t think you’ve created the Child Theme properly.
You don’t need to duplicate the theme, but create a directory inside that theme and import the styles over https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Child_Themes#Example_of_a_basic_Child_Theme .

Ok I made the directory and file, plopped all the code that was in that link you gave me into the file, saved it. and it still doesn’t work. Andrew you are awesome, please hang with me a little longer I think we are getting there and THANK YOU SO MUCH!
