how to remove tags

trying to remove tags because even after i deleted them they still show up in any rss reader, ick, so now im completely done with the whole tagging thing. all i did was with each post i put tags in the box right below it and of course published, then deleted them since i have no use for them. but they arent gone for good it seems.. help please!
