How to remove the […] from post excerpt?

    Hi
    I have this code nested within my div class entry div:

    <?php the_excerpt?>

    When I check an archive, it displays the excerpt but at the end it has this […] that doesn’t link to anything.

    How do I remove that and replace it with a read more.. link?

    I looked in the functions.php and there was nothing related to the […] benig displayed.
