Like so many pathetic newbies on www.ads-software.com, I am trying to remove the “/wordpress” from my url. So, lots of people will paste this link into the comments.

    https://codex.www.ads-software.com/Moving_WordPress#Moving_WordPress_Within_Your_Site

Problem is, I don’t understand how to do the first step:

“Create the new location using one of these two options:
If you will be moving your WordPress core files to a new directory, create the new directory.
If you want to move WordPress to your root directory, make sure all index.php, .htaccess, and other files that might be copied over are backed up and/or moved, and that the root directory is ready for the new WordPress files.”

I have filezilla and I sort of know how to use it. Can anyone explain this first step in a way we mortals can understand?

    Many thanks!!!

PS- I own my domain and host through godaddy.com

We dont use the term pathetic newbies here – we like to think of less experienced users as future experts. Everyone has to start somewhere.

FileZilla will show you the directories and the files on the webserver. your root directory of your hosting will have a folder called WordPress which contains all the WordPress files. you need to move everything out of that directory and into the root directory, so the wordpress directory is empty (then you can delete it). most FTP apps will allow you to select the files & folders and drag & drop into their desired location.

Awesome, thanks! I’m going to try this right now.
