• So one of the first things the “hacked” FAQ article mentions is scanning, and go figure my wp-admin doesn’t work.

It does allow me to login (which is better than other hacks I’ve had) but it wont let me click anything (its completely un-formatted with basically just a list of the menu on the left, but everything just directs me to a “Oops! That page can’t be found” page on my website.

Is there a way to try and restore my admin (view/function) at least? If I could get to the plugins to add hopefully one of the suggested plugins can scan and hopefully I can at least get pointed in the right direction.

    Thanks

I got a reply in my email but its not here (below), maybe it was deleted cause the person was trying to advertise something? I have to think the rest of my website folder carries some sort of files other than just system files or am I wrong? I believe I’ve replaced the wp-admin files before but not “everything other than wp-content”, does anyone know?

Replace everything other than the files you’ve uploaded to wp-content/upload and wp-config.php (though look at that file to make sure it looks more or less like the sample file).

So I went to do this today (finally) and was thinking your response was to replace everything other than wp-content and wp-config which I believe I did on a website a long time ago and it worked, is there a “light” version of this?

I just noticed you said the wp-content/upload folder, which means I’m replacing my entire plugins and themes folder which is obviously going to be tough to recover from. I assume I would have to replace those folders with backups and hope the files mesh together fine?

Or by “light” version of this can I try and replacing everything other than the whole wp-content folder? I believe I have most of the hacked files pinpointed, and there is files in the folders of the wp-content folder but only 1 file in each that I think I could just delete.

You can either replace from your backups or download fresh copies of plugins and your theme. There is no “lite” way to recover from a hack.
