• I started using WP two weeks ago and it is awesome!

There is a myriad of plugins, many with the same or similar function. One can use:
    — # of downloads
    — last updated on
    — start and ratings
    and also scan:
    — comments
    — forums
to decide and select the most appropriate plugin for a particular task. Still, this sometimes leaves several plugins to choose from.

Is there another metric one can use? For example, is there a statistic available about how many instances of a particular plugin are currently installed and activated? Or how many times a particular plugin was executed (if this is meaningful) in some recent time period? Or any other information to help decide?

Not really, no. Certainly nothing indicating how many sites are actively using the plugin. WordPress simply does not collect that information.

When you look at “Active Versions” break-down in Stats tab of a plugin, is this simply a historical break-down of downloads? What is “active” referring to in this case?
