How to send an e-mail to users when I have a new post?

Hello everyone!

I’m finally testing WordPress and got stuck in what I imagine to be a simple task. I want to allow people to register their e-mail address and WordPress to send an e-mail to them when I create a new blog post.

Is this something that can only be done with a plugin?

If so, could you recommend a working one for WordPress 3.7.1? I guess I’m not using the right keywords to search because the ones I found were to really old versions and there are reports that they don’t work anymore.
