    I want to set up a new custom template based on the TwentyTen theme with a new width of 1200px ?

  • Don’t edit the Twenty Ten theme. It is recommended that you consider creating a child theme for your customisations. Once your child theme is active, we should be able to help with the customisation.

    Now you have to start adding your own CSS to the child’s stylesheet (below the @import line).

    I take it’s bad practise to copy and paste the twenty ten’s CSS and edit as needs be?

    Answering at a slight tangent…. does your child’s stylesheet have @import url("../twentyeleven/style.css"); at the top (just after the comment block)?If not, add it. That will import the stylesheet from the parent theme into the child – which means all you need to do then is add the bits of CSS that you want to amend.

    I’d recommend using Firefox and the Firebug add-on for this kind of work.
