• I’m wondering if there’s a way to set up a “group” login/password of sorts. Basically, it would be a user name (like “buyer” “press” or “QA”) that is shared by multiple people. This account would have a password set by the administrator and would not have privileges to change their password or account in any way.

I realize that single-user logins are more secure, but they’re a hassle for some of my users. I’m just looking to turn WordPress into a simple download restriction server. I have photos and info sheets that are too large to e-mail. I don’t want to post them on a general access web server, though, for all users/search engines to troll. If press or a buyer want to get a file, I’d like to be able to send them a link with a login/password so they can visually browse and download the file(s) they want.

Yes, there’s a chance they could possibly leak this login info, but the info being restricted isn’t THAT secure…it’s just not fully public.

FTP and .htaccess + web password are too complicated for many of these users, and complicate browsing, so a single page showing clickable downloads would be perfect. FTP users can change their password…

The Drain Hole plugin looks promising, but limits restriction to category of user vs. a single user or grouping (i.e. “Contributer” vs. “Press” or “Buyers” group).

Anyone know of a way to set up group logins like this, or another solution that would allow group-login based downloads through WordPress? It’s important to restrict hot linking to files and other workarounds. It’s important for only the administrator to administer the account.

    Thanks.
