I would like each registered user to my site to have their own individual member area “data lockers” where documents such as PDF files meant only for them were available for their access.

For example, Moe and Larry each have an account on my website. When Moe logs in he sees his Member Area but not Larry’s and vice versa. Moe can view and access MoeFile1.pdf and MoeFile2.pdf however Larry sees only LarryFile1.pdf. I hope I’m being reasonably clear.

Is this type of setup even doable within WordPress? Every type of member access customization I’ve encountered so far has been hierarchical in nature.

I truly appreciate any insights that anyone might have concerning this.

    Thanx…
    …Steve

  • You may want to try looking into WordPress Multiuser (mu.www.ads-software.com).

A user would register, creating their own blog. You may be able to set their blog to “private” only allowing them to access it. Try searching for plugins that would allow that. Good Luck!

Thanks for the rapid response! WordPress MU looks like great stuff, but for my needs it would be massive overkill and, most importantly, it would perceptually split the website into entirely different member sites, which isn’t what I need.

To go back to my earlier example, Moe, Larry (and all visitors) experience the exact same website upon visiting with the singular exception that logged in members such as Moe and Larry have their own personalized, “member area page” containing their own private documents, news updates, etc.

To help you further visualize why I want it, a generic model would be the construction business. I’m building a contractor site with sub-contractor access. Moe and Larry are subcontractors. They each need to access their own documents but they don’t need to see each other’s. A virtual in-box in effect.

Have I outstepped the bounds of any “out of the box” WordPress solution here?

Again, any help is sincerely appreciated!

    Thanx…

You might want to hang back until WP 3.0 is released. Some MU functionality is being brought back into the core. I’m not saying this will help you for sure but it might be worth doing some background reading on the new functionality.

I will definitely do some research into WP 3.0!

Meanwhile, it doesn’t look like there’s a plug-n-play solution for my scenario at present, unless someone knows any other available options?

This thread might offer a solution.

    That DOES look promising…!

I had same situations here, any feedback or updates new plugins?

same here – I have a client who’s an interior designer and needs to be able to offer individual clients their photos and docs for them to ocmment on in their own private areas.
