How to setup subdirectory

I was able to create a subdirectory on one of my sites with no 404 by using this https://support.hostgator.com/articles/specialized-help/technical/wordpress/wordpress-preventing-you-from-password-protecting-a-directory . For some reason, it does not work for another one of my sites. Any help here? I don’t know what could be different.
