How to show 'Sold' or 'Out of stock' images.

I have a website where the client wants a ‘Sold’ image to be displayed and a ‘Out of stock’ image as well.
Difference being:
Sold – If the product is a one of a kind, when sold, add a Sold image to the product on the front of the site, product cannot be replenished.
Out of stock – Product has stock levels which can be replenished, if all products sold then display a ‘Out of stock’ image until stock levels are replenished.
How can I do this?
Would custom fields be an option to designate if the product is one of a kind?
How would I integrate custom fields into woocommerce templates?
