How to show the background image more then a little strip?

Thanks for this info. I would like something similar but with the center text area to be white. Kind of like this link:

I’m new to all this. Do I place the above code where? My background edges show too small. I want to reduce the white content area.

I’ve tried all the css modifications including the one recommended above. BUT nothing seems to work.

I simply want to reduce the white text area and increase the green side margins.
