We are currently trying to optimize our listing submission form in order to attract more listings.

We only have one plan/category for our customers to choose from. For best usability for our customers it would therefore make sense for that category be automatically selected when accessing the listing submission form.

How would we go about achieving that?

If that’s not possible, is it possible to remove the category field altogether? We really don’t need that field to be part of our listing submission form.

    Hi @salpetriere

    Thanks for your post.

The category field is required by WordPress since BD is a custom post type, so there is currently no way to hide that or select the category by default. That’s something we can consider for future development, but not something the plugin allows for today. We’re definitely considering it for inclusion, but we don’t have a specific timeframe when it will be available at this time.

As a workaround, you can edit the text of the “fee” plan to be more descriptive of what the listing includes to avoid confusion.

    I hope that helps.

    Thanks @bobbied

This is a bit of a problem for us, as my client can only see that field being necessary for users to specify their listing category, rather than it being connected to any sort of pricing functionality. I’ve got to say I agree with them.

I guess the issue for us lies in the fact that the listing categories we have set up all fall under the same cost. We have no requirement for the price of the listing to change depending on the category it falls within. I imagine this would be the case for a number of users of the plugin.

It seems as though those two pieces of functionality, listing categories and payment packages, should be completely separate rather than connected to one another as it currently stands (listing pricing information does not display until a category is selected).

Just giving it some thought, to resolve this problem would it not possible to set up the payment packages as some sort of fully custom field rather than making them dependent upon a CPT category being selected?

We already have the ‘Plan Category Policy’ > ‘Plan applies to all categories’ option in place. This doesn’t resolve the issue.

    Hi @salpetriere

Thanks for getting back to me on this.

You can certainly hack the plugin to get what you need here, if that helps. For now, though, this isn’t an option in the plugin. I can submit it for further consideration as an enhancement, however.

If you decide to customize the plugin, please understand that hacking the plugin comes with it’s own risks and complications–like the fact that any changes you make can break other aspects of the plugin and any issues you have need to be tested against an unmodified plugin for support. If you can reproduce on the unmodified plugin, we can fix it. But any updates or changes have to be maintained by you in your custom version. It’s a pretty big hassle.

If you’d like to proceed with that and have the right skill set, you can learn more about that here: https://docs.businessdirectoryplugin.com/themes/customization.html
