how to style menu and header

  • (I just submitted this query already but it has not appeared on the site so from now on I will copy all my posts into notepad!)

    I have astra. I want to style my header and menu. customize-header builder allows me to add ‘site title and logo’ and a ‘transparent header’, but not style the header. Customize -menus allows me to edit, but not style the menu. I have tried other themes but cannot see a way to do it with them either.

    I have been advised to make a child theme to style the header and menu using css, which I know, but this seems a convoluted process to do something rather basic. (I got confused half way several different walk throughs online tbh)

    Please advise.

    ps.I want to learn quickly, and would be happy to pay for several hours tuition over the phone. Is this possible and can you recommend someone? I have signed up with a wordpress meetup group but they have no meetup imminent.
