How to take off thumbnails on posts or make them bigger

So I uploaded featured images on all of my posts so they can appear under the popular, latest, tags widget. But now when I want to display my posts, the featured image thumbnail is on top of the regular image. I’m not sure how to take it off. Do I have to do without the featured images? Another question is how to make the thumbnails bigger if I just want to display excerpt posts?
