How to tell if plugin is safe?

    Howdy,
    I have been looking for a mortgage calculator plugin. I found one that appears to be nice here: https://www.wpmortgagecalculator.com/

    However, I am concerns w/ regard to spam, safety or security of the plugin. Should I be?

    And if so is there some way to evaluate the safety of a plugin?

    Are plugins on the wordpress site considered for the most part safe, secure and spam free?
